Dark Needle“, a vertical panorama of the night sky above Lake Tahoe by Nick Cahill ’13, is the cover image for the Fall 2015 National Geographic Special Guide to the Night Sky, a Stargazer’s Companion. Cahill, currently the media director for Force 12 Media, is also an accomplished landscape and music photographer and videographer. He credits the education in digital arts he received at SNC for the skills and motivation he needed to take his work to a professional level.

The image was shot at SpeedBoat Beach, right by the Cal Neva. It’s a vertical panorama composed of 6 single exposure images, looking straight down to straight up. “Think of it as panoramic mode on any smart phone – just created with a camera and puzzle pieced together” Cahill explained. The images were taken with a Canon 5D Mark 3 with a 24-70 f/2.8 lens at 2.8 for 25 seconds and an ISO of 6,400. Cahill is currently building a tiny home on wheels to roll his photography and love for outdoors and remote work together into a “life in the slow lane” lifestyle. Garnering over 3,300 Instagram followers, this ambitious venture has already attracted a range of sponsors including: Goal Zero solar, Home Reserve, Proper Grounds Coffee Roasters, Diff Eyewear, Nemo Equipment, and Sip Caddy.
