MFA-CW 2017 Winter Residency in Jamaica
SNC Tahoe’s MFA in Creative Writing Program held its winter residency on the northern coastline of Jamaica, by the Blue Lagoon near Port Antonio. The residency featured visits from Jamaican writers including Nicole Dennis-Benn and Tanya Shirley, readings and workshops with Nick Flynn and Carolyn Forché, field trips for travel writers into the town of Port Antonio, and much more.

Our graduation ceremony was held on a tropical ridgeline overlooking the blue waters of the Caribbean Sea, and our graduating students’ Two Pines final reading was among the very best readings we’ve had in years. Our larger intent — to remain grounded in our Tahoe roots while also serving as global literary citizens — was realized in profound and meaningful ways during our residency in Jamaica.

By Writers, For Writers
SNC’s MFA in Creative Writing is a two year low-residency program, built entirely by writers, to guide authors organically through the exploration of their craft and and prepare them for a sustainable life of creation and publication. No other program nurtures a writer from line and sentence to essay, story, poetry collection or novel like ours does.
Our editing semester is a uniquely practical experience in crafting work which is both thrilling and publishable. Our gifted faculty are here because they want to launch unique, individual voices within a global dialogue; to see risks taken, new moves in language braved, and students grow into professional and artistic peers.
If you are interested in joining this transformative experience alongside teachers and peers who are passionate about the art they love, then please contact us — we look forward to meeting you.
