Plein Air Landscape Oil Painting

July 13th – 17th, 2020



Explore the excitement and challenges of painting the Sierra Nevada landscape “en plein air” with local artist, Phyllis Shafer. Appropriate for all skill levels, this workshop is intended to cover the basics of landscape oil painting. It will initially focus on an efficient and workable set-up in the field and how to develop compositions that emphasize a personal interpretation of nature. Also included will be discussions and demonstrations focused on color theory, color mixing, perspective and brushwork.

Phyllis Shafer has been a full-time, Professor of Art at Lake Tahoe Community College since 1994. She received her Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of California, Berkeley. As a practicing artist, Shafer has exhibited her work nationally and internationally since 1984. She is currently represented by Stremmel Gallery in Reno, NV, where she has had seven solo exhibitions. In 2014, the Nevada Museum of Art staged a mid-career retrospective exhibition of her paintings titled, “I Only Went Out for a Walk”.
