Line and Gesture: Porcelain and Soda Firing

|This workshop is centered around expressing line and gesture in form and surface of porcelain pots. It is this exploration of line, gesture and movement that continues to captivate me as I continue to express those qualities that is inherent in the material. We will cover many areas of pot making, including functional and aesthetic choices that lead to a better understanding of material, and the generation of new ideas and processes. The throwing demonstrations will concentrate on exploring the gestural qualities of porcelain through functional pottery. We will also be making work that is thrown and immediately altered off the wheel. Through this exploration of line and gesture, we will also be working with thick slip as a way to express yet another kind of line that highlights the material and form in a different way. Be ready to stay dirty for 5 days!|
Over the past 20 years I have concentrated on atmospheric firing, more specifically the soda fire process. As a group, we will glaze, load and fire the soda kiln.
This part of the workshop will be an intensive “hands on” look at the entire process of glazing, loading, and firing. We will also go into the how’s and why’s of the soda process.
We will be firing the soda kiln with bisque work that you bring with you. This workshop will include lecture and demonstration and will be hands on! We will be making pots daily, and having discussions. There will be one soda firing, which means that you will have many pots that do not get soda fired. These pieces will be bisque fired for you to take home.
Matt Long received his MFA in Ceramics from Ohio University in 1997, and his BFA in Ceramics from the Kansas City Art Institute in 1995. After receiving his MFA, Matt went on to become a Teaching Lab Specialist, Adjunct faculty, and Visiting Assistant Professor at The University of Florida in Gainesville for over six years. In 2005, Matt moved to Oxford Mississippi to join the art faculty at The University of Mississippi. Currently, he is an Associate Professor of Art, and the Graduate Coordinator for the Department of Art and Art History at The University of Mississippi.
Matt has become a well-known workshop presenter, teaching workshops and lectures at over 40 universities, colleges and art centers both nationally and internationally.
His work earned him the NCECA emerging artist award in 2000 along with many juried awards and purchases into prestigious permanent collections. He has been featured in every serious ceramic art publication including Ceramics Monthly, Studio Potter, Art and Perception and Clay Times, including being featured on the cover of the worlds most widely read ceramics magazine in 2004, Ceramics Monthly.
His work can be seen in many national and international shows. Matt is represented by Red Lodge Clay Center in Red Lodge, Montana.
