Merging Clay and Glass

July 23rd – 27th, 2018

 

This class provides the opportunity for participants to create mixed media sculptures in clay and glass. Students will learn various handbuilding techniques to create organic sculptures in clay and experience the ancient art of lost-wax glass casting. Students will make a small-scale ceramic sculptures with glass elements and learn how to sculpt a small wax forms then make a one-time use mold to reproduce in glass. Learn handbuilding techniques and distinctive techniques for working with wax, plaster-silica mold making, de-waxing molds, kiln processes and firing schedules of casting glass. Students should come with ideas and can expect to complete 1-2 small projects.

Biography:

Exhibited throughout the United States and Internationally, Helen Otterson’s ceramic and glass sculptures are part of the permanent collections at the Swidler Collection, Crocker Art Museum and the Plains Art Museum. Her work has been published 500 Sculptures, 500 Figures, and Cast. Helen holds a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Miami and has been an Artist in Residence at the Northern Clay Center, International Ceramic Studio in Kecskemét, Hungary, and Anderson Ranch Arts Center.  A native of Southern California, Helen currently teaches in Kentucky.
