Your education here is not complete until you have paddled the waters, hiked the trails, climbed the rocks, and experienced all that the Lake Tahoe basin has to offer firsthand.

What are you doing this weekend?

The SNC Outdoor Adventures Program was launched in an effort to create more program options for students. This new effort was organized by Dean of Students Will Hoida. The trips are built around weekends and include backpacking in Yosemite, rock climbing near Bishop, sea kayaking on Lake Tahoe, and whitewater rafting down the American River. The goal of the program is multifaceted and designed to promote wilderness adventures in the Sierra Nevada, team building, and leadership development. Overall, the program reaches more than 100 SNC students and provides unique experiences for those involved in the program. The sense of adventure, camaraderie, and support generated during these trips is significant.

Students are already anticipating more programming for the upcoming academic year. More importantly, there is already a cluster of interested student leaders to serve as assistants as the program evolves. As the college moves forward with this program, there will be several enhancements including the addition of more advanced trips and leadership training courses. Furthermore, an inclusive schedule that leads into the spring will be developed as the year unfolds.

This program provides several important contributions to student life at SNC. Primarily, this program offers students options other than staying on campus during the weekends. Secondly, it helps students become acquainted with the challenging environment presented to an 18- or 19-year-old who has just moved to Lake Tahoe. Lastly, it provides an opportunity for experienced students to excel in the outdoors and develop their wilderness leadership skills.
