“Coloring Kings Beach” – Jamie Himes

Jamie Himes Service Learning Project, “Coloring Kings Beach”, earned her the Sierra Nevada College Award for “Inspiring Community Impact”. Local kids in the Boys and Girl Club Arts Program beautified the North Lake Tahoe Event Center of Kings Beach with colorful mosaic tiles on three large flower planter boxes.

Jamie, an Interdisciplinary Studies student in Art and Psychology, got her original inspiration came from Peter Hazel, the artist who created a mosaic fish over the driveway of Lanza’s Restaurant in Tahoe Vista. She saw the potential for community art involving students from the Boys and Girls club, and worked with Jenna Bache, SNC graduate and the current Art Specialist at the Boys and Girls Club, to bring 20 children and 150 pounds of clay together for the transformation.

“I thought about how nice it would be to be able to give back to a place (the Event Center) that puts on events for our community and gives significant funding to the Boys and Girls Club of North Lake Tahoe every year.”
