The American Response to Vietnamese Buddhism presented by Erika Gillette

October 2, 2012 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

During the Vietnam War, Americans reacted to the actions and images of Vietnamese Buddhists in many different ways: viewers were disturbed by wrenching images of Vietnamese monk Thích Quảng Đức publically immolating himself in 1963 to protest the South Vietnamese government;  American GI’s formed a little-known rock and roll band called The Monks in 1964; and Martin Luther King nominated Vietnamese monk and activist Thích Nhất Hạnh for the Nobel Peace Prize in 1967. Bring your own reflections with you to this talk about the response to Vietnamese Buddhism.
