SNC Gets a Visit from Former U.S. Ambassador to the Sudan

On Thursday, April 11th, Ambassador Tim Carney will speak on the “Rise of Militant Islam Across Saharan Africa.”  Carney will outline implications for United States and Western Policy The session will be held at 7:00 p.m in TCES 139/141.  The public is invited to attend.

Ambassador Carney brings over 40 years of experience in some of the key conflict areas of the world.  Most notably, he served as the last U.S. Ambassador to the Sudan (1995-1997) and as Ambassador to Haiti (1998-1999).  He began his career as Foreign Service officer in 1967 with his first posting to Saigon, South Vietnam at the time of the Tet Offensive.  He was posted to Maseru, Lesotho and returned to Southeast Asia with an assignment in Cambodia and subsequently in Thailand. He spent three years in Pretoria, South Africa during the crisis over apartheid,  Over his lengthy career, he had postings in Southeast Asia, South Africa, Somalia, Sudan, Iraq, and Haiti among others, as well as assignments to the United Nations.

Now retired from the Foreign Service, he continues to provide consulting and other services, including temporary assignments from the State Department.  Most recently, he has served as the Executive Vice President of the Clinton Bush Haiti Fund.  Ambassador Carney is a Member of the Board of the American Academy of Diplomacy.
