Class of 2017 Valedictorian Announced
The SNC Tahoe Faculty is pleased to announce the selection of Francesca Curtolo as the 2017 Sierra Nevada College Valedictorian.
Francesca came to SNC as a sophomore from Università Ca’ Foscari in Venice. Having come from the far more traditional knowledge-based Italian educational system, she found a new perspective in SNC’s interactive approach to learning. Here, she explored learning across disciplines and making connections between academic knowledge and practical applications. She developed close relationships with faculty mentors, and discovered her interest in journalism. Her work on the Eagle’s Eye, writing in her third language, earned her the Journalism program’s 2016 Golden Quill Award. Despite entering with only 12 transferable credits and being an English language learner, she completed her BSBA in Finance and Economics with a minor in Journalism in three years.
Francesca skied for the winning SNC Eagles USCSA Alpine Ski Team for two years before being sidelined by an injury, winning the 2016 Women’s Individual National Championship in Slalom. In the off season, she competed with the Water Ski club and kept score for the Soccer teams home games. She has been part of the Honor Student program, an active member of the SNC Young Professionals, tutored students in Math and Economics, and served as a peer advisor for Business majors.
“Coming to SNC meant moving for the first time in my life away from my family and my home country, by myself. This has fostered my ability to think in an entrepreneurial way to find creative solutions to the challenges of living abroad.”
Francesca was chosen from a slate of excellent nominees whose intellectual curiosity, academic dedication, and community involvement affirm why SNC Tahoe is an incredible place to learn. The selection committee congratulates all the candidates for the contributions they have made to the college, and to our lives.
