In today’s evolving higher education environment, Sierra Nevada College recognizes the need to adapt to change. To address budgetary challenges, the college last week reduced its baseline budget and eliminated faculty and staff positions. The decision to take this action came after much discussion about our financial health, academic mission, and long-term sustainability. Those positions eliminated have been held by teachers of the highest caliber and integrity, and the college wishes them well in the future.
Like many small liberal arts colleges with limited endowments, SNC Tahoe depends on tuition. And, with fewer students graduating from high school annually and a strong national emphasis on workforce preparedness, enrollment and recruiting have become more challenging. We have not been immune to this trend of enrollment decline, and at SNC Tahoe some majors have been more severely impacted than others.
Last week’s realignment of our baseline budget was designed to solve this recurring problem systematically and permanently. In addition to cutting costs, we will drive revenue by putting greater focus on high-demand academic programs, while supporting expansion of new extension centers on community college campuses.
As an institution, SNC’s faculty and staff are the backbone of our academic mission. They inspire students, change lives and stimulate intellectual curiosity. Understanding this, the leadership of the college and our board of trustees made this difficult decision solemnly and after great deliberation.
As we prepare to enter the new school year we continue to be guided by our values, with a commitment to the team of professionals who make learning happen at SNC Tahoe. We believe these changes allow us to continue serving our mission while positioning SNC Tahoe to realize a sustainable future.
