It began with the syllabus, a notebook page of ideas and the intrinsic motivation to have an impact. Service Learning was my first experience creating a three credit independent study designed specifically to satisfy my vision. My sixty hour service component consisted of co-teaching a white water kayaking class, guiding a two day white water rafting trip on the East Fork of the Carson River and volunteering as a climbing instructor with the local after school program.
My service-learning project in the Outdoor Adventure Leadership (ODAL) Interdisciplinary Studies Program gave me the opportunity to expand my learning through direct real-life experience. My passion for rock climbing and knowledge gained in my ODAL classes gave me the confidence to develop and implement a climbing wall and climbing programs at the new Truckee Community Recreation Center.
The Art Installation Backpacking Trip I designed incorporated my disciplines: Fine Art and Outdoor Adventure Leadership. This trip was meant to help students to think creatively while reconnecting to the land.
In the fall of 2012, I worked on the restoration of Rosewood Creek for my service learning. The main cause of the restoration is to reduce sediment loading into Lake Tahoe by restoring a 7,200 foot section of Rosewood Creek between Northwood Boulevard and Tahoe Boulevard in Incline Village, Nevada.
