Robert King, professor of Humanities at Sierra Nevada College was chosen as a fellow to attend the World Congress Summer School workshop in Social Economics June 19-20 in Glasgow, Scotland. The workshop precedes the Association for Social Economics World Congress which takes place June 20-22.
Fellows must be current graduate students or have received a Ph.D. since 2007 in economics or related fields to be considered for the Summer School workshop.
King received a B.A. in English Literature from the University of Florida. He went on to earn a M.A. in Literature, Theory and Cultural Studies, and a Ph.D. in Philosophy from Purdue University. King’s writing has been published in several journals. He is working with Journal of Philosophy: a Cross-Disciplinary Inquiry as the book review editor. In addition, King is working with Darrell Arnold of St. Thomas University, Miami, on a book entitled Traditions of Systems Theory: Major Figures and Developments(currently under review at Routledge). This spring King is teaching World Civilizations, Renaissance and Reformation, Literary Criticism, and Language, Thought and Culture at Sierra Nevada College.
The Summer School workshop, held in conjunction with the World Congress of Social Economics brings together a small group of fellows to discuss central concerns of social economics as a springboard for cutting-edge research and teaching. For example, fellows will explore questions of social, cultural and ethical values in economic life through the scope of philosophical, theoretical, empirical and policy-related levels.
Summer School topics will cover aspects including social economics and the history of economic thought as well as frameworks for thinking about ethics and economics; core topics in social economics research such as theory of the individual, the role of social and cultural values in economic life, inequality, poverty, needs capabilities, social justice and human flourishing; contemporary topics and empirical research in social economics; and publishing outlets and strategies for recent Ph.D.s and graduate students.
