Alumni-Student Collaboration makes Olympic Broadcasts

Alumnus Andrew Gauthier, ’12, worked with two current SNC, students, Brendan Wheelright and Cheyanne Sawyer, to create the History of Freeskiing Timeline for the Association of Freeskiing Professionals (AFP).  As Gauthier proudly points out, “the Timeline is AFP’s flagship document, that we used to introduce the mainstream media to freeskiing during the Sochi Olympic Games.”

Indeed. Gauthier, Sawyer, and Wheelright’s work was utilized by The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, ESPN, and NBC during this year’s X-Games and the Sochi Olympics.

Since slopestyle and halfpipe freeskiing were set to debut in the Sochi Olympics, AFP needed a way to “introduce and present an accurate picture of the new sports to the rest of the world that maybe doesn’t watch the X Games or Dew Tour.”

Gauthier, who received his Masters degree in Hospitality Management from The Glion Institute of Higher Education in 2013, is now the Marketing and World Tour Manager of the AFP. He created an internship program between Sierra Nevada College and AFP to give students a chance to work on the high-profile project. Sawyer & Wheelright conducted numerous interviews with the most influential individuals in the freeskiing industry over the past 15 years.
