Elementary Certification Program: Phase I

Sierra Nevada College offers course work to provide eligibility for teaching multiple subjects at an elementary level

INTASC Standards

Each of the courses in the program focuses on, introduces, or reinforces one of the Interstate New Teacher Assessment and Support Consortium (INTASC) standards. The INTASC standards follow logically and sequentially from the goals and outcomes of the program. These performance-based standards require that, upon completion of the Teacher Education Program, the pre-service teacher will be able to:

  • Use the concepts, tools of inquiry, and structure of the disciplines taught, and create learning experiences to make them meaningful to students
  • Use the teaching strategies that develop and provide learning opportunities which support student learning and development
  • Understand how students differ in their approaches to learning; create instructional opportunities adapted to diverse learners
  • Understand and use a variety of instructional strategies
  • Create a learning environment that encourages positive social interaction, active engagement in learning and self-motivation
  • Use knowledge of communication techniques to foster active inquiry, collaboration, and supportive interaction
  • Plan instruction based on knowledge of subject matter, students, the community and supportive interaction
  • Understand and use formal and informal assessment strategies
  • Reflect on teaching
  • Foster relationships with colleagues, parents, and agencies in the larger community

Elementary Certification Program Overview

The elementary licensure program consists of three semesters: two in coursework and one in student teaching. Complete course descriptions can be found in the college catalog.   Field experience is an important part of the licensure program and all courses require completion of a speceified number of hours of practicum and/or microteaching with students in a school setting.

Required Testing

Elementary certification requires students to pass the Praxis I or CBEST test before student teaching; Nevada School Law, Nevada Constitution, and U.S. Constitution (or course equivalents) before entering student teaching, and successfully pass Praxis II as partial fulfillment of passing student teaching.  Student teaching must be completed before entering 600 level courses. For more detailed information click here.
