Our neighbors stand on their porches, surrounded by neglected plants cultivated in retired cooking pots and old paint cans, drinking tea or beer and discussing the so-called divine healings taking place all around us. Meanwhile, we eat our watery beans with thick chunks of jalapeño peppers and as many slices of tasteless bread as we can stuff down, and console each other against the mysteries by discussing the finer points of the Coincidental Self-Eventual, a well-known scientific principle that can explain all the supernatural events.
