Elite Athlete Let-down: A Study of Post Injury Reactions

-Hilary Peterson

Wimmer (2007) noted that in elite athletes there is intense pressure to achieve superstardom, and a finite period of time in which that status may be accomplished.  When the goal of athletic success collapses through unexpected setbacks like injuries, athletes may show signs of anxiety, PTSD, depression, and even suicidal ideation.  This study used an interview method to ascertain the responses of elite athletes to life altering injuries.  Three Olympic hopefuls who suffered injuries were asked about his or her goals, setbacks, and the effects of being prohibited from competing. The over-riding theme that emerged from all three respondents was a sense of optimism.  These results may call into question the use of self-report methods to accurately reflect the experiences of the athletes.
