We do not use specific guidelines or themes in selecting poems or stories for the Sierra Nevada College Review. Some things we like are vivid images, fresh use of language, understatement, suggestion, and nuance. We look for ideas and characters that haunt our imagination. We often respond favorably to "place" poems or stories, work that captures the essence of a region. We like wit and style and many other (equally indefinable) qualities.

Some things we don't like are clichés, sentimentality, and heavy didacticism. We're a little tired of material seemingly written for shock value only and the world-weary cynicism we see frequently and other (equally indefinable) qualities that strike us as undesirable.

We realize these "guidelines" are imprecise, but we do not know how to avoid that. Simply put, we publish what we like.

The best way to get an idea of what sort of material we publish is to read the review and submit your work to us if we look like your kind of place. Back issues are available for $5.00 and current issues for $10.00. Contributors receive two complimentary copies. Writers retain all rights.
