My two great loves are paintings and ceramics. In the Painting with Clay workshop I will share with you my exciting discoveries combining these two art forms. We will explore several surface decoration techniques including various ways of making marks, impressions, carving, wax resist, scraffito and painting with clay slip onto the surface of forms to create dynamic and imaginative ceramic compositions.

Using prepared bisque ware pieces, I will share my glazing techniques and we will discuss color combinations with an emphasis on low fire translucent gloss and opaque matte glazes.

British born ceramic artist, Sharon Virtue teaches and creates work at Ruby’s Clay studio, a non-profit artist co-operative in San Francisco, California. She has taught ceramics to adults and children for over 10 years.

Dedicated to the community art process, Sharon has conducted ceramic programs, earth architecture projects, community mosaic projects and art therapy programs with children and adults in San Francisco, Brazil, Uganda, Mozambique and Haiti.

She was the Artist in residence at the de Young Museum, in January 2006 and in 2010 the recipient of the NCECA international residency award to Ghana, West Africa.

Sharon has been awarded several grants from the San Francisco Arts Commission, the Haas Foundation, the Clay and Glass Arts Fund, The Vogelstein Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts.

Currently, as part of Ruby’s Clay Studio outreach program Sharon is the program manager and lead art teacher of the Mud Bus. This mobile clay studio brings free ceramic classes to underserved youth throughout the Bay Area.
