Stan Welsh | Head’s Up: Ceramic Head Constructions

This class will teach a wide range of hand building techniques and skills necessary to create large scale human heads. This will be hands on workshop with an emphasis on individual direction and personal expression. The class will focus on the anatomy and proportion of the head and facial expressions to create psychological profiles or snapshots of human emotion. The class will also concentrate on the development of personal symbols and imagery to be attached to these head forms along with surface treatments such as drawing and carving to further emphasize your particular idea. Each class day will consist of demonstrations, group discussions open work time and slide lectures. This class will be suitable for students from all levels beginning- advanced. Biography
Stan Welsh is currently a professor at San Jose state University in California. He received his B.F.A. from Kansas City Art Institute in 1974 and his M.F.A. from Alfred University in 1979. In 1986, Stan received a N.E.A. award and in 1990 he received a California Arts Council award. Stan was has had numerous solo exhibitions, in 2004 his work was included in an four person exhibition at the Daum Museum in Missouri titled “Bay Area Ceramic Sculptors” curated by Doug Freed and in 2005 he had a solo exhibition at the Santa Cruz Museum in California titled “Head’s Up!” curated by Kathleen Moodie. The San Jose Museum recently purchased three of Stan’s large head constructions. Stan’s work is represented in many permanent museum collection and important private collections throughout the United States and Europe.
